Description

Be one of the few to experience Juneau's iconic glacier up close and personal on this Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure tour! Your journey to the moving river of ice includes pick up at the cruise ship docks downtown, transportation, waterproof gear and safety equipment, healthy snacks, and expert guides to lead the way! Everything is provided for you to enjoy an epic exploration of Mendenhall Glacier and Juneau's pristine wilderness. Your friendly guides explain how to properly paddle the canoe, then it's a team effort to glide across the lake past the stunning waterfall and right next to the face of Mendenhall Glacier. This journey is half the fun, but the up close views of the glacier makes the experience unforgettable. Upon arriving at the rocky shore, you'll have the opportunity to walk right in front of the giant ancient ice. Your guided trek will be on the moraine, which is the rocks and sediment carried down by the glacier right along its edges. This glacier is receding quickly and is constantly moving and changing, so each day provides a new terrain and a view of the stunning blue ice. Permits to the site are extremely limited, so if you have your heart set on a Mendenhall Glacier ice adventure make sure to book this tour early!

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear and bring?
We provide waterproof jacket, pants, and boots, a life jacket, paddling gloves, helmet, trekking pole, and a dry bag. We suggest wearing comfortable, non-cotton layers to go underneath your waterproof gear, and it's a good idea to bring a hat, gloves, warm socks, and sunglasses. We also provide bottled water, snacks, and a hot beverage.
How many guests can attend on this tour?
There can be up to 24 participants on a departure but you will be in a group of up to 8 guests with 1 guide.
Will we enter ice caves?

Mendenhall glacier is receding extremely quickly, making the terrain on the ice increasingly challenging. You will not be walking on the ice, and instead will be exploring right along the edge on the rocky morraine. The face of the glacier and the other features that form are incredible sights and you will be experiencing Mendenhall in a way that only a small percentage of visitors are able to.

Are the canoe paddle and the trek difficult?
No canoe experience is necessary, but be prepared for an arm workout! Participants should be comfortable hiking over steep and uneven terrain for approximately 1-2 miles. This tour is not recommended for guests with back or hip problems.
