Our Local Expert's Guide to Fortress of the Bear
Fortress of the Bear: What Makes It So Special
Want to see bears up close and personal? Of course you do! For most visitors to Alaska, seeing bears falls in the Top 5 of their bucket list. And Sitka, Alaska offers one of the best places to do just that! The Fortress of the Bear is a wildlife sanctuary where you can get up close with these incredible creatures while supporting their conservation. And it’s more than just a sanctuary - it’s a celebration of the region’s magnificent bears.
The sanctuary cares for orphaned bears that were rescued as cubs and nursed back to health. What truly sets Fortress of the Bear apart though is its commitment to education. Through engaging exhibits and knowledgeable staff, visitors learn about the challenges brown & black bears face in the wild, fostering a deeper appreciation for Alaska's wildlife and ecosystems. As a local Alaskan, I love that the sanctuary is not just about observing; it's about understanding and advocating for these incredible animals.

Where is Fortress of the Bear?
Just a short drive from downtown Sitka, Fortress of the Bear is easily accessible for visitors. Situated at 4639 Sawmill Creek Rd, visitors can enjoy a scenic drive through downtown Sitka and out along the shoreline of Silver Bay before their unforgettable bear encounter.
The History of Fortress of the Bear
The Fortress of the Bear rescue center opened in 2007, under the direction and vision of founder Les Kinnear. Les is the heart and soul behind Fortress of the Bear, where he created a safe haven for orphaned bear cubs in response to Alaska's lack of rehabilitation programs. His vision transformed the abandoned pulp mill waste water treatment tanks near Sitka into a recovery center. With his hands-on approach, he tackled the daunting task of removing over 500 tons of old infrastructure and designed everything from the bear enclosures and security features to the visitor amenities, turning Fortress of the Bear into one of just three state-approved facilities to hold, care, and disburse bears in the state of Alaska. Nowadays, you can find Les greeting visitors with a warm smile, sharing his adventures as a local guide and his deep love for these magnificent creatures.
Currently, there are 8 bears living in the sanctuary (to learn more about the bears, check out “Fortress of the Bear & More: A Sitka Wildlife Guide”). On average, about 89,000 visitors per year come to the sanctuary to experience these lovable bears up close. The Fortress of the Bear continues its mission to save orphaned cubs and works with zoos and wildlife organizations around the country to find new homes for them. They are also currently working with with Alaska Department of Fish & Game on a rehabilitation program in hopes of one day releasing rehabbed bears back into the wild.

Visiting Fortress of the Bear Today
When to Visit Fortress of the Bear
The Fortress of the Bear is open daily from May to September, and only on the weekends in April and October. In the busiest cruise ship months (June - August), the sanctuary will often be packed with tourists. If you're looking for a quieter experience, early summer or late fall can provide a more intimate visit with fewer crowds. The sanctuary is closed November through March so that the bears can hibernate.
What You'll See When You Arrive at Fortress of the Bear
Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by an array of educational displays that introduce you to the sanctuary's mission. The main attraction, of course, is the bear enclosures, where you can observe the bears in a naturalistic setting. It’s truly amazing to me that you can literally be within 25 feet of a brown bear! I honestly could have stood there for hours watching them. And the staff are wonderful too! They are happy to share their knowledge and passion with guests, and you’ll learn about each bear’s story, their behavior, and their little quirks!
In addition to the bears, you’ll find scenic walking trails, an observation deck, and educational exhibits that highlight other wildlife in Alaska. Make sure to bring extra batteries or charge your phone, because I guarantee you’ll be taking LOTS of pictures here!

Getting To & Around Fortress of the Bear
Getting to Fortress of the Bear is easy! If you're in Sitka, you can reach the sanctuary by car, tour bus, or even by bicycle if you’re feeling adventurous. The easiest way to access the sanctuary is to hop on a tour, which includes transportation and admission. Or visitors can take the public city bus “Blue Line” - but please note, the buses are small and walk-in space at the sanctuary is limited. Even taxis/Uber/Lyft are very limited in Sitka, so in my opinion, the tours are the best way to go!
Once there, the sanctuary is designed for easy navigation, with well-marked paths and viewing areas that allow for close encounters with the bears while ensuring safety for both visitors and animals.
